I recently uploaded images in PNG format to your platform. However, I noticed that when I download them, they are converted to JPG format. This change in format reduces the quality of the images, which is a problem for me.
Is there a way to download the images in PNG format? If so, could you please guide me on how to do this? If not, are there any plans to provide this capability in the future?
Hey there! Im not with the roboflow team, but I thought I would reach out and see if I could help:
I copied a png image and uploaded the copy to a roboflow dataset and and then downloaded it back. Heres a picture of the file informations from both images.
JPG to PNG is inherently a lossy conversion up until recently when algorithms have been made that allow full 1:1 conversion. Its pretty cool stuff. That’s what roboflow is doing after upload, so there shouldn’t be any image degradation.
but if you are seeing image degradation, it must be coming from somewhere else. Could you tell me, where you are seeing it?
You may experience loss if you use our augmentations or preprocessing steps (particularly resizing). However, we encourage almost all users to resize down their images as the models perform well at small image sizes (e.g., 640x640) and you’ll get a noticeable throughput increase (which will save you GPU costs and make your applications run faster).
